Hello friends!!!

We are back with a new book review! I actually finished this book a few weeks ago, but I wanted to get out my ARC review first. I’m also going to be changing my schedule slightly for uploading new blog posts. Instead of just having it be Sunday, I’m going to give myself the whole weekend to get the posts out. This means that you might see posts on Saturday or Sunday. This just allows me to account for any shifts in my plans, loss of motivation, and it just makes me feel like there is less pressure (even though it’s really not).

Outside of that, let’s get into the book!

Her father fell in love with a God of the sea.

Hannah Kaner, Godkiller, First Line

I’m genuinely not sure where to start with this particular book. When I picked this one up to read, one of my good friends said she DNF’d it. It just wasn’t for her. I’d be lying if this didn’t initially change how I thought about the book as I approached it. I always try to put that type of thinking off to the side when I approach it.

Once again, I was unsure. Will I like this book as much as everyone else? There’s always that little reading gremlin that likes to come out and try to make me feel bad for not liking the popular book. Of course, if that was a problem here, I wouldn’t be writing a review, and you wouldn’t be reading it.

This book follows three main people: Kimmer the Godkiller, Elo the ex-soldier turned baker, and Inara the noble, along with her connected God of white lies, Skedi. In this world, the worship of Gods has been outlawed after a large war against the Gods took place, and the King came back victorious. Kimmer is a Godkiller who goes around destroying the shrines of Gods and kills the Gods themselves. Due to circumstances that I won’t spoil, Kimmer ends up protecting Inara and agrees to bring her to the place the Wild Gods used to live to try and find out why she is bound to Skedi. Along the way, they end up tangled up with Elo, who has his own agenda for travelling to this now forbidden land.

I think the part that kept me going through this book the most was the relationship between our Godkiller, Kimmer, and an ex-soldier-turned-baker, Elo. They have this relationship that is so subtle at first (at least to me, anyway). There are two more books after this, and it seemed like their relationship was just starting to turn into something near the end of this book. I have no idea where it’s going to continue from there. I’m also genuinely curious about the connection between Inara and the little god attached to her, Skedi.

The world itself is interesting. You have a place where people used to freely and regularly worship gods of all kinds. The wants and desires of the people help these Gods come to life, and then the Gods will demand various tokens in order to give their gifts to people. These can range from gold to animals to human sacrifice. Needless to say, this world is a bit complicated. Obviously, if you suddenly tell people they’re not allowed to worship their gods, there is going to be some pushback.

It took me a while to get into this book, and with that little gremlin (remember, the reading gremlin?) sitting in the back of my mind. In the end, the characters really helped make the decision. The world plays a part in this as well, but if the characters are not interesting and I don’t want to know more about them, then the book will be no good (for me at least).

In the end, I want to know what is going to happen to all of these people. The last few chapters really solidified that for me. I’m not going to tell you what happens because of that whole no spoilers thing that I try to maintain. I definitely will be continuing this series, and I really hope that it only gets better from here. That being said, it will probably be a while before I get to come back to this world, considering my backlog of books I have. Oops.

Back at the end we are! If you made it all the way through, thank you! I hope that there are at least a few people out there who enjoy reading these, and I’ll keep posting them as long as my fingers don’t fall off.

See you all next week!

Bye friends!!!
