Hello friends!!!
Welcome back to another book review. I have a couple of reviews in the works currently. I’ve been trying to write out my thoughts relatively quickly after finishing a book. I always worry that if I don’t and I start a new book, that I’ll forget everything I thought about the previous book. Is that what will happen? No idea, but I don’t feel like testing that theory right now.
I am still working on another book box subscription review, and soon I want to try to go back to exploring the horror genre again. I think it’s a genre that I can find some really interesting sub-genres in.
Anyways, let’s move on to the review!

David pulled up to the haunted house ten minutes before he was expected, because arriving late was for amateurs and getting there too early was for interns.
S.T. Gibson, Evocation, First Line
At first, I wasn’t sure I was going to like this book all that much. I picked it up because I loved A Dowry of Blood by S.T. Gibson, and I wanted to experience another one of her novels. The cover to this one is absolutely beautiful, depicting the main character as the tarot card The Hanged Man. This book also fulfilled the prompt of “a cover with a frame” for one of my reading challenges.
I am a big fan of fantasy and many of its subgenres. This particular book is an Urban Fantasy, meaning that it takes place in the real world in an urban setting. This one takes place in modern-day Boston and includes many supernatural elements, such as spirits, tarot, and summoning rituals. That is not usually a genre that I gravitate towards, so I was taking a chance on this book because I previously enjoyed another work by the same author. I hesitated to actually start reading this book many times because it’s Urban Fantasy, and I didn’t want to be disappointed.
With all of that said, this book surprised me. At first, I couldn’t stand David, one of our main characters. He’s rich and stuck up. The type of person I would be annoyed to even be in the same room with. By the end of this book, I had cried for him twice. I cared about this character, whom I initially was convinced I was going to absolutely despise. I love watching his relationship change with Rhys and Moira. Moira is 100% my favorite character. The characters in this book really shine through, and I am so beyond excited to follow them in the other books in the series.
This novel really shines through its characters, but the plot itself is also interesting and worth following. We have David, getting sicker and sicker by the moment due to some unknown supernatural reason. Moira and Rhys are there to try and help him figure out what is going on, while also receiving something from David in return. It’s a compelling plot that you want to understand and see through to the end.

This book was a surprise for me. The characters are really the stars of the show. I was pulled into their lives so quickly and I just wanted everything to work out well for them. I genuinely was rooting for a happy ending for each of them. While David started out as a royal asshole (pardon my language), I was so happy for him in the end.
Thankfully, this means I can continue to praise S.T. Gibson (which is good because I have another one of her books on my shelf waiting to be read). Her writing is something I truly do enjoy, as evidenced by the fact that I’m giving a genre I don’t normally like a whopping 4.75/5.

And we come to the end of the review for today! I hope you all enjoyed it. If you do end up reading this book, please pop in and let me know what you think. I’d love to start some more discourse on this blog. And make more book friends. 🙂
See you all next week!
