Hello friends!!

I’m back with a new book review and you might have noticed that it is not any of the books I put on my TBR at the beginning of the month. I looked at the book and thought to myself “lets read that” and so I did. I read it. Let’s talk about it.

Cover of the book Taken by the Dark Elf King
  • Author: Charlotte Swan
  • Genre: Fantasy, Romance, Spicy
  • Spice: Yes. I’d give it like a 3.5 on the spice scale.
  • Trigger Warnings: Listed at the front of the book!
  • Pages: 185
  • Published: 2022
  • Publisher: Self-published/indie author
  • Series: Monstrous Mates Book 1
  • Goodreads Rating: 3.81
  • StoryGraph Rating: 3.63

I have some thoughts.

I’m not sure this is the book for me and honestly, I’m surprised the ratings on the book tracking apps are as high as they are. That being said, I’m not going to sit here and just bash on this book for 10 years because that’s rude honestly and I’m just not a fan of those reviews. I just don’t think this is a book for me and I’m going to explain to you why without being a complete jerk about it. I hope.

This is very much an indie author and a self-published creation and that’s absolutely fantastic. I bought the bundle of the first and second book for this series directly from the author through TikTok after seeing a promotion video about the books. The premise was interesting and the books themselves are not that long so I wanted to get them and give them a try. When I received the books, they were packaged beautifully and each one is signed with a little heart. I love that. It’s the type of thing you can only get from purchasing directly from an author.

Now, in terms of the book. It was short, but honestly that doesn’t bother me really. At under 200 pages it was the kind of book that’s nice to just pick up and read in a sitting. It’s definitely intended for that spicy, monster-loving romance audience (which I can admit that I am apart of). It says on the book that it had an editor but there are still some places where you can see a typo, a misspelled word or missing punctuation. It does seem like it needed another set of eyes to take a look at it. Content wise, it felt a bit disjointed at times. There were some parts where I couldn’t really figure out what the point of it was, or why x topic needed to be mentioned.

I did enjoy the interactions between the two main characters (and no I don’t just mean the sex). There was some fun banter between the two and I genuinely enjoyed their dynamic. There were parts of their interactions where I didn’t want to just skim through but was genuinely engaged. I just wanted a bit more. Honestly, ratings sometimes depend on what you hope to get out of the book while you read. I had hoped for a bit more and so I was disappointed in the end.

This isn’t going to get a high rating from me. That being said, I still want to try out the sequel. It’s short so I don’t feel like I’ll waste my time with it and I’d like to give the author another chance. I definitely need more than one book to determine an author isn’t for me.

I couldn’t give this higher than a 2 I’m afraid. I thought about giving it a 3, but in the end there were parts that bugged me enough as a reader to warrant the 2 star. I don’t like giving out ratings under a 3 but I have to be true to my thoughts. I will give this author another chance though because they deserve it. I’ll be back with another review of theirs in the future.

That’s all for this week folks. I know it’s a bit short and I didn’t have my fun quotes I usually leave in but I didn’t actually annotate this one at all. Next week we will have a monthly wrap-up which will be not very large again (sad face) but I am hoping to give myself some more reading time coming up.

Bye friends!!!

Lol, I’m also part of the odd romances that have come out this decade and the title sounded intriguing. I was hoping you would have loved it just because I haven’t indulged that side of my reading life in a while. I hope you find a 10/10 next read.

I was definitely very interested when I bought it! I love books like this but unfortunately this one just didn’t hit for me though. I am sure plenty of other people love it!! I’ll never discourage someone from trying a book I wasn’t a huge fan of. I’m still going to give the sequel a try. They’re such short books that I don’t see the harm in spending some time on them.
