Note: This is a review of the first iteration of the ARC. There has been a second iteration since I finished reading.

Alright! Let’s get into it.

So I’m pretty new to reading ARC copies. This is my second one this year and I honestly DNF’d I think 2 last year, so I usually go into it with pretty low expectations. That doesn’t mean that I expect the worst, but I understand that there will be some flaws and changes between the ARC and the fully released version.

This ARC was honestly probably one of the best that I have read so far this year. Most of the time, I can overlook any sort of typos or anything along those lines so I can’t really speak to that part of the book. I probably autocorrected while reading if I’m honest. Unless it’s just horrendously bad. And constant. This book was none of those things.

I genuinely enjoyed the writing style of Riley Knight and this book kept me pretty hooked. I’m honestly quite curious on what is going to happen in the rest of the series. There have been so many fantasy series recently where I’m just indifferent on what happens next and I don’t feel like there are really any questions left to answer. This is not one of them. Questions were definitely answered by the end, yes, but there are more! I also genuinely am not sure what’s going to happen to the main character. Who is going to be the one she ends up with in the end? Is it both? What’s the deal with her family? Where are people going? It’s actually quite difficult to give you these questions without giving away parts of the book! Trust me, there are more.

Lets talk about the characters, because if the characters aren’t great then it’s really hard to get into a book. No issues there with this one. The characters are dynamic in so many different ways. There is one character, Brand (no not the one from League of Legends) who I can’t really figure out. His character I feel like could be flushed out some more but honestly, that might be the point. The main characters Talon, Janus, Des, Felsin, and Gemellus are all well thought out. I find myself cheering for different pairings and wanting to know more about the past of many of these characters. I need to know more.

There is an interesting magic system for this book as well. I’m not entirely sure I can explain it very well but there are evokers who bring objects to life via their own memories. There are also fortune teller types of people who read the fortune through the stars and tarot cards. Honestly, I don’t understand it all but that is potentially my fault as a reader. I was VERY focused on where the plot was going that I might have glossed over some of the details of the world. My bad.

I genuinely enjoyed this book. It hooked me in pretty quickly and if I had more time in the day I would have read it so much faster. I am excited for the next book and will definitely pick up the physical copy when it comes out. I’m really excited to see what is added in and changed around between the ARC and a fully released edition. For me, it was the characters that really did it for me in this book. The plot is great as well and I love a good mystery. I left with so many more questions and I’m not mad.

All in all, I give this bad boy a 4/5. I have a hard time giving ARC’s 5 stars because they are technically a work-in-progress in a way. There might not be a lot of changes between the ARC and the final copy but I won’t know that until the final comes out. I will definitely pick this up for my collection (like I mentioned above) and I liked the way this author writes so I’ll probably go look at some of the other books they have released. When this book comes out, I definitely recommend giving it a try!

That’s it for today everyone. I’ll be back next week!

Bye friends!!!
