The Review

So, I’m going to do this one a bit differently than usual because I don’t have a ton to mention in the two categories and also, I just don’t feel like sorting it out if I’m honest. This one, is primarily a vibe type of deal and not really any one thing in particular (if that makes sense).

So it took me a while to get through this book primarily because I wasn’t getting super sucked into it. That’s a me thing in this instance. I just really wanted to complete the book and so I did, but I just wasn’t feeling that particular book in that moment. I am a mood reader and sometimes, it’s just not hitting that itch.

“She shook off the disappointment. She could only rely on herself after all.”

So the characters in this book. They aren’t bad really. I think part of my problem is that I read this book right after reading When The Moon Hatched and the FMC (female main character) gave off similar vibes to the FMC of the previous book. Part of my brain was still in that other novel and that was influencing how I was feeling about this new main character (Kierse).

She did have a habit of mentioning multiple times in the beginning how she came from “the streets”.

Like, so many times in such a short span of pages.

It drove me batty.

The overall plot was kind of fun though. A magic, dystopian kind of monster filled New York with a heist, a nice library, and romance? Like, that’s my kind of vibe. I was genuinely interested in the plot of this novel but I feel like there was just something missing. Could I tell you what that is? Absolutely not. But something and it’s a bit frustrating but not enough for it to get a super duper low rating. I’m pretty generous with my ratings and honestly, I give a lot of 4 stars. This just…wasn’t it unfortunately.

All of that being said, this book was not bad enough to warrant a DNF (did not finish) or for me to decide that I won’t continue the series. I’m truly interested in where this story is going to go. I am interested to see how the authors writing might improve as they become more comfortable with the world they’ve created and the characters as well. This isn’t their first book by any means, but there might be some clunky writing when creating a whole new world. Might.

Final Thoughts and Rating

It took me longer than you would think to finish this book but it just wasn’t hitting the right spot for me, which could be due to a book hangover from the massive book I read before this or because I’m a mood reader. I don’t really know. In the end, I decided to give it a 3 star rating. This isn’t a book that I would immediately recommend to someone else but it also wasn’t a bad. It was, for lack of a better word, meh.

And that’s all she wrote my friends. If you took the time to read through this review, thank you. Genuinely, this is something I’ve wanted to start for a long time and I appreciate every single like that I get. You are all amazing and if you also write blogs, I hope they are doing super well. This wasn’t the best book I read but I don’t regret reading it. If you’ve read it, let me know your thoughts as well!
